|
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Lead the overall process development activities from bench scale through the pilot plant to commercialization for the production of high value chemicals using Virent’s BioForming technology platform.
• Work with project collaborators and lead all process engineering activities associated with a recently awarded $2 mm USDA grant to produce propylene glycol from biodiesel derived glycerol.
• Use chemical engineering skills to synthesize new process designs for chemical production utilizing Virent’s novel catalyst technology. This includes developing methods for the purification of biomass-derived liquid feedstocks and the purification of the resulting end-products.
• Develop process flow diagrams, heat & material balances, piping & instrument drawings, and economic estimates of chemical processes from initial concept to final design.
• Work with R&D and Business Development to identify and prioritize chemical products targeted for commercialization.
• Collaborate with R&D to improve and optimize reactor designs for chemical production.
• Develop heat and mass transport models of reactors and other chemical processing equipment using accepted engineering practices.
• Provide internal and external project updates as required.
• Coordinate work of internal and external resources and act as the engineering interface with customers and partners.
• Execute departmental administrative tasks as necessary, such as participating in the strategic planning process; budgeting for the department and its assigned projects; and resource planning.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
• EDUCATION: BS in Chemical Engineering. MS is preferred.
• EXPERIENCE: 7 years minimum desired. 10+ years preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary to perform essential functions
• Experience in processing of biomass-derived feedstocks.
• Ability to conceptualize, develop, and screen new chemical process designs using sound engineering and economic principles.
• Experience with all phases of process development from initial concept to lab prototypes to pilot plants to commercial scale plants.
• Experience with heterogeneous catalysis systems and reactor designs for chemical production.
• Knowledge in the design and operation of chemical separations, including distillation.
• Advanced skills in steady state and dynamic simulation using Aspen Plus are required.
• Process design skills including equipment sizing and specification, heat and material balances, PFD and P&ID development, relief load calculations, and instrument specifications are required.
• Experience with process controls and/or Process Hazard Analysis (especially HAZOP) a plus
• Able to accept responsibility and follow through on multiple tasks simultaneously to completion
• Able to function efficiently in a team environment
• Able to adopt an applications-oriented, hands-on focus
• Strong oral and written communication skills
