Title: Group Leader-Medicinal Chemistry
Reports to: Vice President, Chemistry
Summary and Scope of Position: The Group Leader Medicinal Chemistry ensures the delivery of high quality drug development candidates within competitive timeframes and with optimal medicinal chemistry contributions at high scientific standards in all assigned drug discovery projects. The Group Leader Medicinal Chemistry effectively manages and leads the reporting medicinal chemistry group and develops the capabilities of the staff and the chemistry technology platform.
Managerial
Manage a medicinal chemistry group of up to 10 PhD level scientists and MSc or BA level research associates within ongoing hit to lead or lead optimization projects.
Provide performance feedback, create and implement development plans for subordinates in collaboration with Vice President, Chemistry. Determine key requirements of subordinate positions and recruit and evaluate candidates for staff roles together with Vice President Chemistry and HR. Participate in the strategic planning and development of the Chemistry Department as a member of the Chemistry Management Team, to ensure the highest standard of the medicinal chemistry contribution to the projects.
Coordinate medicinal and/or synthetic organic chemistry outsourcing activities or collaborations within assigned projects if relevant.
Scientific
Manage all medicinal chemistry activities in assigned projects ensuring the delivery of high quality development candidates within competitive timeframes.
Resolve medicinal chemistry related patent issues within assigned projects, including developing and executing a strategy in close collaboration with Patent attorneys, to ensure optimal protection of medicinal chemistry related IPR.
Coach and advise subordinates in medicinal, synthetic and organic chemistry issues to ensure high quality contribution to assigned projects.
Participate in the development of the synthetic and analytical chemistry technology platform to ensure efficient synthesis, purification and analysis of single compounds, compound series and libraries.
Ensure high quality communication of medicinal chemistry issues at the project team meetings and in reports.
Ensure documentation of performed scientific work according to good scientific, practical and SNAP/LU guidelines.
Ensure the group maintains the highest laboratory safety standards. Hold group members accountable for safety in their area. Ensure any lab modifications enhance safety.
Ensure a strong network and visibility of Synaptic and Lundbeck in the medicinal and synthetic organic chemistry field by participation in scientific meetings and by developing and delivering high quality publications and presentations.
Requirements
Education
PhD and PostDoc in synthetic organic chemistry required.
Experience 10 years medicinal chemistry and drug discovery industrial experience is required. Experience with all phases of drug discovery from hit identification to delivery of development candidate, using state off the art (automated) parallel synthesis technologies also required.
Track record of significant scientific contributions with publications in peer-reviewed journals and patents is essential.Experience effectively managing, supervising or leading other professionals strongly preferred.
Medicinal chemistry experience with GPCRs in the CNS field, and a demonstrated track record of delivery of high quality drug development candidates preferred.
Additionally, strong interpersonal and influencing skills, and comfort working in a changing environment is beneficial.
